A form of healthcare that is over 3,000 years old. Acupuncture is effective in treating numerous health conditions. Hair thin needles are inserted into very specific points to promote balance and healing. The sensations felt with the needles are not painful. The needles are sterile, stainless steel and disposable. A thorough history and physical examination of each patient is done and an Oriental medical diagnosis is established prior to treatment.
Additional modalities may be used in conjunction with treatment, such as:
- Electrical stimulation: A mild electrical current is applied to provide continuous stimulation to acupuncture points.
- Moxabustion: A form of heat therapy that uses an herb called mugwort to stimulate acupuncture points.
- Cupping: Glass or plastic cups are used to create suction on the skin to increase circulation.
- Gua sha: A small, flat ox bone tool is moved across the skin to unblock areas of stagnation. This technique is also used to reduce and tonify acupuncture points.
- TDP lamp: A therapeutic heating device which is placed over specific areas of the body to increase circulation to help alleviate pain and stiffness.
- Magnets: Magnets are placed on certain points of the body, often used for nausea and pain conditions.
- Press Tacks and Ear Seeds: Used for continuous stimulation to acupuncture points as a take home treatment.
- Pediatric Acupuncture Treatments: Several modalities can be used that are needle free. Smaller gauged needles can be used and are dependent on the child and the condition being treated. Sho ni shin which translates to “little children needle” are often used to affect the child’s natural flow of energy. These non inserted needles are used to tap, rub, and press certain points and areas to treat the child’s health concerns.
- Cosmetic Acupuncture Treatments: Used to diminish wrinkles, firm facial muscles, tighten the skin, reduce blemishes, and revitalize the face. In addition to acupuncture, supplemental therapies may also be used including: acupressure, electrical stimulation, and herbal supplements.
- Stop Smoking Acupuncture Treatments: Ear acupuncture is used to stimulate specific points that help with the stress, cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. Ear seeds or pellets secured with tape are placed on the same points so that the patient may continue to stimulate these points in between visits. Herbs are sometimes prescribed to provide additional help with cravings.
Herbs and supplements are carefully selected to correct imbalances within the body to assist in treating many different health conditions and for general wellness.
Herbal formulas consist of two or more herbs and can be taken in many different forms including: pills, powders, teas, decoctions, tinctures, and external liniments and plasters.
